As you take your first walk in the door, the smell hits you. Delicious. I've been to some pretty amazing BBQs in Texas and St. Louis, and for a moment I felt like I was there. I was really disappointed to find out that 5 Star BBQ is technically out of my range, but it is definitely worth sharing.
The menu is pretty simple with a variety of meats and classic BBQ sides. You can get any of the meats on either a sandwich or plate. Also, you can order with one side, two sides, or without sides. They weigh all of the meats and will trim off the fat if you want so you know you get the good stuff.
There is a large variety of BBQ sauces in a cooler by the fountain drinks. I tried the House BBQ and Sweet BBQ. At first it was hard to differentiate between the two, but both were delicious. The meat is pretty moist on its own, but the BBQ sauce definitely adds some flavor. The sweet BBQ won my heart by the end. Both the brisket and pork were amazing. Tender, moist, and flavorful. I got a bit on the side and in the bun and both were great. The bun is toasted perfectly and complements the meat and sauce well.
All of the sides that we tried were good, but only Scott really loved his sides. He would give the coleslaw a 5/5 and said the stew hit the spot too. Eric enjoyed his mashed potatoes, but said they weren't anything special. The potato salad is made with red potatoes, which gives it a nice flavor, but the consistency is soupy. The Mac 'N' Cheese was good, but nothing to write home about. Most of the sides were peppery, which is good if that's what you're into.
This pumpkin cake is out of this world. Though we all enjoyed our meals, this was the best part of all for us. In fact, I was the only one who ordered it originally, but each person tried a bite and then went and got their own slice. It melts in your mouth and has perfect flavor. Pumpkin pie has always been a favorite, but this takes the cake—literally. It's straight from Grandma's cookbook and a perfect way to end this meal.
Do differently next time:
Try other sides. Mine weren't anything special, and I'm hoping that something on the menu is. They have some after-5pm side options that I'd be interested in. Also, for how good the meat was, I'm excited to try the ribs sometime.
Good Choice. This was almost an Absolutely Go, and the guys felt that the pumpkin cake pushed it over the edge, but I think the sides need to be higher quality to merit my highest review.
